Maintaining Balance

What is balance in your life? What does balance mean to you?

We are all individuals, and we need different things for well-being. At the same time, we are so very similar. Thousands of people have different nuances of my problems and yours and have had them through the ages.

For me, the balance begins and ends in my mind. Understanding and being in tune with the beauty and the kindness inherent in this universe, no matter what happens - in that knowledge I balance everything that comes my way. Including me.

How Well Do You Maintain Balance?

If trying to maintain balance in your life makes you feel like a tightrope walker, you're not alone. Most of us have so many demands on our time and energy, life can feel like a three-ring circus. Take this quiz to see how well you are meeting responsibilities, while also recognizing and fulfilling personal needs and wants.

True False

1. The only way I can successfully manage my life is to take care of myself physically and emotionally.

2. Nurturing myself enlarges my capacity to help others.

3. I eat healthfully and exercise regularly.

4. I set aside personal, quiet time for myself, whether I'm meditating or simply letting my thoughts drift.

5. I experience the gifts of each season: ice skating, sledding, bundled-up beach walks; gardening, hiking, more time outside; camping, swimming, barbeques; harvesting the bounty, gathering wood, spending more time inside.

6. Creativity nurtures me, too. I do what I love, whether that’s cooking, drawing, painting, writing, dancing, singing, or another creative pursuit.

7. Reaching out to others enriches my life. I spend quality time with family and friends.

8. Contributing to the world provides connection and purpose, so I give my time, energy, and experience where it is most useful.

9. I notice and heed the emotional signals that tell me I'm out of balance: irritability, overwhelm, resentment.

10. If I feel that I’m catching a cold, I realize I may have stressed my immune system with over-activity, so I stop and take care of myself.

11. When I need or want to, I say no to requests for my time.

12. I listen to and honor the requests my body makes for such things as a nap, a walk, green vegetables, hot soup.

13. If I have something planned for myself, I don't just toss that aside when someone makes a request of me.

14. I'm busy, but I find time to do the things I want to do.

15. I'm happy. I regularly experience well-being, contentment, even joy.

If you answered false more often than true, you may want to take a look at the questions to which you answered false and see if you can incorporate something of its message into your life. Please don’t hesitate to call if you’d like to explore this issue further.

Do you believe that people should be respectful, courteous, and kind?

Here’s a radical thought – once YOU have truly mastered that art YOU can love THEM – no matter what they do.

Be radical - use kindness!

Of course, you already do that as much as you can, and you well know how powerful that is.

But what of the situations when you get triggered?

What about the people who demand too much, the patients who are aggressive? When we feel attacked or threatened we move into defensiveness and put up boundaries out of fear.

Accessing love and compassion in healthcare and healing

Love and compassion are often overshadowed by the belief that something else is more important right at that moment.

In the practices of presence and mindfulness, we begin to see that every moment is sacred as it is, and in accepting it, it opens a doorway to perfect love.

Any moment of perfect presence is free from stress and strain. Committing to growing present moment awareness strengthens the qualities of your heart and spirit.

You probably have experienced many moments of that presence while being fully focused and in flow with your work. The trick is to learn to consciously choose this state of mind.

Stillness speaks

Eckhart Tolle suggests reading this book like a sutra; slowly and contemplatively, putting it down to digest and reflect as often as continuing to read.

"Any disturbing noise can be as helpful as silence.

How? By dropping your inner resistance to that noise, by allowing it to be as it is, this acceptance also takes you into that reality of inner peace that is stillness.

Whenever you accept this moment as it is - no matter what form it takes - you are still, you are at peace."

Research has shown that patient and empathetic doctors and medical staff are better at healing people.
Are you surprised?

Just like for everyone else, what keeps doctors and staff from being patient and connected is stress. Knowing short-term and long-term strategies to alleviate stress can be the difference between job satisfaction and despair. The Leaders Work process definitely qualifies as a long-term strategy - I'd even call it preventative medicine!

Sharing is Caring

If you know doctors, veterinarians, or other primary caregivers who exhibit signs of burnout such as short temper, impatience, and always being rushed, forward this link for a free guide to improving their career

I'm working with struggling doctors, veterinarians, and other medical professionals who feel so overwhelmed by the daily challenges and unpredictability of their job that they have no energy left to enjoy their life.

Through The Leaders Work private coaching, I help these doctors feel supported and energetic, and have a fulfilled and joyful life outside of work.

If you know any doctors struggling in this way, send them my way for a FREE Stress-Free Medical Career Clarity Session that offers valuable tools and can determine whether my facilitation can be helpful to them.

Wishing you all the best!

Warmly,

Why do I do what I do?

"My greatest joy in life is to work through your fears with YOU.

I love seeing you begin to understand the extent to which your conditioned mind held you hostage, and drop those self-imposed chains.

I love the light on your face when you realize your own beauty and your freedom.

I love watching those deep breaths that happen when the tension finally drops away.

I love hearing the celebration of what happened once you begin to act with confidence and integrity.

I love watching YOU EMERGE and open your beautiful wings.

You are such a joy."
